More Scenes at the Beach (a series of parodies that take place at a resort on the beach)
BERTA
It’s been a long day for me. No time for even a little rest.
MARIA
I work since yesterday very early. The Doctor and Missus go out last night again. They only leave the room almost one hour ago.
BERTA
Aye, almost it is one-thirty. How much time do you have before you go back?
MARIA
I am to be with the girl at two.
BERTA
I have until three. Almost I feel like I know you all my life, Maria.
MARIA
You too, Berta. Even though I come from Salvador and Guatemala is your home. Three long years we have worked next door to each other. For three years we go on same vacations. Christmas in Hawaii. Summer in Laguna. Aspen in Easter. Both of us strolling the childrens up and down the streets and watching them in the park as if they are our own.
MARIA
And our own ninos at home alone.
BERTA
Si. And when Mrs. Debbie stay in the bed until nine o’clock when I come to make the girl breakfast before I take to the school. Almost sometimes she stay in the bed until too late and make big mess of my day. Very bad is the day I change the sheets. Very, very long for me.
MARIA
And for me when Mrs. Sandy come home with many, many clothes and want for me to cut all the tags and fold the bags and put away. The Missus’ closet look like the big store. I am to be sure all the colors are — are — How say? Coordinated?
BERTA
Si. And when Mrs. Debbie tell me my dinner no good and say I put lima beans in the lasagna. Is that so bad?
MARIA
All the time I feel very terrible when the Missus complains. Aye, but when the childrens complain, I feel to quit. Jenny say I mix her socks. She say they are outside in. And Joey he say no good snacks when I bring home.
BERTA
I am to go to the store every day. I buy Caesar salad in the box for little Amy to take to the school. She only like Caesar salad in the box. All this talk about food make me too hungry. I am thinking to get something to eat while we talk.
MARIA
I no suppose to get from the room service. I need go to the 7-Eleven and put away my food in the little refrigerator.
BERTA
You share with me.
MARIA
Gracias, Berta, but I have a little minute and need to go. These vacations are too hard work. At home more easy. Everybody go shopping, going to health club and going to lunch with friends. I call that a vacation. They say this is vacation. I miss my T.V. and my music.
BERTA
And me my Manuel.
MARIA
I now go get towels and chairs for the Doctor and Missus.
BERTA
I will walk with you.
MARIA
Better not to. They will think we’ve been talking.
